Canola seed is among three biggest oil seeds in the world. After processing, it can give 35-45% canola oil and 55-65% canola meal, which means it is not only an important oil seeds, also a source for plant protein. However, current canola meal contains full hull. Its application on animal feed is limited, as supplement to soybean protein. The hull in canola seed not only lower meal protein level, also affect the digestion and absorption of animals because the hull contains glucosinoxime, phytic acid, tannin etc. anti-nutrition matters. Thus the study of dehulling canola seeds is always a topic of various institute and oil mills.
Normally hull accounts for 12-19% of whole seed. The main composition is fiber. Minority other includes little oil, protein, pigment, tannin, sinapine and phytic acid. With dehulling, it can not only separate anti-nutrition matters, also boost protein level from 35-40% to 45-48%. The color of meal becomes more yellowish. The meal and oil quality are both improved.
Main dehulling methods are grinding, smashing, shearing and pressing. None of them can give effective result alone. The dehulling is either low rate or small capacity, not viable for an ordinary oil mill. After series of experiment and trial run, we have developed a special dehulling device incombination of above-mentioned four methods giving 85% dehullling rate at 1500t/d capacity. The protein in rapeseed cake is around 46%. We have been working on such dehulling process for 6 months. The performance is steady and continuous, which proves our approach is mature for mass industrial production.
